P10: Structural and functional imaging of neuroimplants (O. Jansen, S. Boretius, J. Hövener)

The development of neuroimplants promise dramatic improvements in the treatment of brain diseases in the near future. At the same time, much research is still required to investigate and reduce unwanted side effects of neuroimplants on the brain. Accurate imaging is required to place and monitor implants. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides non invasive, three dimensional imaging of the brain with an excellent soft tissue contrast, spatial and temporal resolution. The fact that no ionizing radiation is required is particularly important for frequent imaging and close monitoring of the implant's faith without harmful side effects of radiation exposure. In the scope of this GRK, the goals of P10 is to develop the methodology for in vivo imaging of implants, namely:

1. to establish an animal model to investigate neuroimplants with 7T MRI

2. to develop and implement MRI sequences for microanatomical brain imaging in an animal model to investigate neuroimplants

3. to develop non-invasive ASL-based brain perfusion sequences

4. to apply the developed MRI methods on different implants.
