Brain cancer persists as a difficult-to-treat condition. Glioblastoma (GBM) is among the deadliest primary brain cancers with a dismal prognosis despite current surgery and chemo-radiation. Ad-vances in local therapy (from nanotechnology to engineered stem cells) have led to innovative strategies for the treatment of GBM. These strategies are in the early promising stages and rep-resent adjunctive therapies for standard of care. Current and future strategies are increasingly designed to target specific cell types such as brain tumor-initiating cells (BTICs) and immune cells. This talk provides an update from our laboratory team as well as other groups on emerging insights into strategies with a focus on local therapy as tools that facilitate 1) drug delivery 2) gene therapy and 3) engineered-cellular therapy for GBM and future directions for brain cancer treatment.
