P5: Sensor-actor system for signal-controlled release of drugs in the brain (F. Faupel)

The ultimate means to prevent severe epileptic attacks would be a device that senses an attack already in its early phase and then delivers a therapeutic useful dose of an antiepileptic drug to the place in the brain where it is needed to prevent the attack. Based on this desire the project P5 aims to develop prototypes of an intelligent actor-sensor system that fulfills these needs. This innovative project is highly interdisciplinary involving both materials science and neurology and will use a step-by-step approach in the development of the components of the device while always integrating the latest know-how developed in the other projects.
