Characterisation of the degradation and cellular interaction of Mg materials

Due to its ability to dissolve in the human body, magnesium qualifies particularly for the use as base material for temporary implants. In combination with drug coatings or by adding therapeutically active elements, such as silver, gadolinium or lithium, magnesium implants facilitate local and controlled drug release over longer periods of time. This is especially desirable for the treatment of brain related diseases.

Project 1b of the GRK 2154 focuses on the biodegradation of magnesium based thin films for the use as neuro-implants. Within the scope of this project, magnesium degradation is analysed under brain-like conditions, to predict and understand the degradation behaviour of magnesium implants located in the human brain. Alongside other parameters, the influence of the chemical composition of the brain environment and the impact of brain cells are primarily studied. This is achieved by e.g. varying the degradation media or by comparing the influence of healthy brain cells to the influence of cancerous brain cells on magnesium degradation.
